Riverndale Farm & Hoopoe Guest Cottage
Location
Situated in a verdant valley at the foot of the Langeberg mountain range, Riverndale Ecofarm is just the place for those needing a tranquil escape from cities and suburbia. It is situated a stone’s throw from the Boosmansbos Wilderness Area near Heidelberg in the Western Cape. Just 280 kilometres from Cape Town, it’s half way to Knysna and within comfortable reach for a weekend.
Accommodation
Nestled under trees with a stream flowing just behind it, Hoopoe Cottage is the perfect venue for those who enjoy simple amenities in a peaceful country setting. There’s no worry about Eskom power failures as the cottage is equipped with gas fridge, stove and shower, and plenty of candles and paraffin lamps enhance the romantic atmosphere.
The cottage is self-catering: cutlery, crockery, utensils and a braai place and grid are provided. The cottage can accommodate up to six people: there are two bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a double bunk and a single bed, and there is another single bed in the lounge. Guests need to bring their own towels; bedding can be hired for an extra fee or guests can bring their own.
Activities
The farm is a kid’s paradise: a beautiful stream with clean water; fields to play in; and fun activities like animal petting (rabbits, guinea pigs and chickens) and pony rides.
For adults, there are many possibilities for the active: mountain biking along the spectacular Eden Country route; horse riding (individual outrides for experienced riders or lessons for beginners); hiking on the farm’s circular trail through pristine fynbos; and spectactular kloofing.
Bird watchers are in for a treat, with local specials including Jackal Buzzard, Blue Cranes, Greater Double-collared Sunbird, Cinnamon Dove, Rameron Pigeon, Olive Woodpecker, and many more. Wildlife seen on or near the farm include honey badger, caracal, genet, mongoose, Cape clawless otter, bushbuck and grey rhebok. There is even a resident leopard in the area which has been spotted close by. The large Korentepoort dam is easily accessible for those keen on swimming or boating.
Alternatively, just sit back and relax, absorbing the beautiful surroundings and sounds of nature. There’s no cell phone reception at the cottage, so you can really escape the rat race and restore your vitality!
